Circles Meditation

This body of work was developed during an artist residency at Arteles Creative Center and emerges from a meditative, process-based practice shaped by the local climate and landscape. The work centers on a repeated gesture: drawing a circle using a stone collected from the surrounding environment. Through repetition, the circle becomes a tool for entering an altered state of awareness rather than a pursuit of formal completion.

The emotional flow of the process shifts from initial resistance and bodily tension toward rhythm and immersion, as breath and movement align and linear time dissolves. The stone, shaped by geological time and weather, functions as both tool and collaborator, transmitting the conditions of the environment directly into the hand. Air, wind, and cold actively influence the drawing, positioning nature as a co-author.

Through sustained repetition, a chemical reaction unfolds between the physical and mental: muscle fatigue sharpens focus while concentration temporarily overrides discomfort. The process ends when the weather becomes too frozen for the hand to hold the stone. This forced stopping marks a threshold where intention yields to environmental limits, emphasizing surrender, impermanence, and coexistence with natural forces.

Glowing stones

This work was created during my artist residency in Finland as part of my Circles Meditation project. I approached the stones as figures, almost as companions, recording them as friends rather than objects. Instead of photographing them with a camera, I painted the stones using stone itself, allowing a raw, manual, and tactile process to shape the images. Through this act of stone shaping stone, the figures begin to glow, revealing a hollowed presence. The work reflects a quiet tension between existence and non-existence, where solidity and absence meet, and the stones appear both grounded and fleeting at the same time.
